Why it’s on the Edit

Gattarella Family Resort is a family resort at Lama le Canne, near Vieste, inside the Gargano National Park. The Regione Puglia register files it as a four-star residence hotel (residenza turistico-alberghiera). It sits on a hill in a pinewood by the sea, with a private sandy beach below.

The offer is aimed at small children. A Montessori-equipped nursery takes under-3s, a mini club and entertainment by age group fill the days, and an adventure park in the trees is open from age 5. The resort says plainly that babies, toddlers and children are its stars.

A quiet, adults-only stay is a different trip. The price band is 1 of 5, an estimate, since no official rate was found.

The rooms

The resort sells three ways to stay: hotel rooms, self-catering apartments in the residence, and villas with a private pool. Hotel rooms have air conditioning, a private bathroom with shower, Wi-Fi and private parking.

Couples have the Suite Vista Mare (58 m²), with a double bedroom, a living area with a sofa bed and a veranda with a sea-view hot tub. It sits on the highest point of the hill, and the resort advises against it for families with young children. Deluxe Plus Vista Mare (38 m²) is the smaller sea-view room.

Families have more to choose from. Family Seaside rooms measure 30 to 60 m² and take 2 to 7 people, and the family suites have two connecting bedrooms with private bathrooms. The Family Executive Parco is a 120 m² apartment with four bedrooms and a 70 m² garden, sleeping up to 10.

In the residence, Classic Parco apartments are about 30 m² and Family Superior Parco about 60 m², with a veranda and a cold shower. The villas have four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a private pool.

Eating and drinking

The hotel lists two half-board plans. Standard gives a buffet breakfast and dinner at the panoramic Belvedere Restaurant. Premium swaps dinner for an à la carte meal at Trattoria Orcio, which serves Apulian tradition with home-made pasta.

The Gazebo is a pizzeria with a wood-fired oven. For the youngest, an infant buffet for ages 0 to 2 offers salt-free broths, pasta, meat and fish. The resort also sells its own olive oil, Natolio.

Residence guests are room only and can buy the Standard plan on site, subject to availability. The resort has gluten-free options but cannot guarantee full protection against contamination.

The setting

The resort describes a hilltop position and scattered architecture among Mediterranean maquis, so expect rooms spread across the hillside rather than one block.

The private beach, Baia di Portonuovo, has a gradually sloping seabed. Two pools, a children’s pool and a semi-Olympic adults’ pool, run on set hours, with some slots reserved for the entertainment team. There are two red clay and one synthetic-grass tennis courts, canoe hire (free for an hour a day) and two gazebos on the rocks called the Wellness Cove.

Windsurfing and SUP can be hired on the beach. The resort also points to Vieste, with its narrow alleys, castle and cathedral overlooking the sea, and lists boat trips to the sea caves and a day on the Tremiti Islands.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

Gattarella Family Resort suits families with babies, toddlers and school-age children: the nursery, the mini club, the gently sloping beach and free places for children under 16 under the stated conditions. Dog owners can take a dog onto marked areas of the beach, for a daily charge.

Look elsewhere if you want silence or a boutique masseria. In the same area, Hotel Gargano and Pugnochiuso Resort are other places to compare, and the Gargano hub lists the rest.

Getting there

Gattarella is at Lama le Canne, near Vieste, on the Gargano. Bari airport is the one to fly into.

You need a car to reach the resort and to see the surroundings, and the resort lists free parking. Residence guests have a shuttle to the beach.
