Puglia in autumn and winter: what is open, and what to do

The short version

Puglia is quieter and partly closed in autumn and winter, and opening months are the hardest fact to confirm. As of October 27, 2026, only 12 of the 169 stays on The Puglia Edit confirm they are open all year, among them Masseria Prosperi near Otranto, Bianco Riccio Suite Hotel in Savelletri and Le Dune Suite Hotel near Porto Cesareo. Five more confirm March to November. For every other stay, ask first.

Is Puglia worth visiting in autumn and winter?

Autumn and winter suit a trip built on quiet towns, food and walks rather than beach days, as long as you check what is open. Regione Puglia’s content on italia.it describes autumn as a time for nature, traditional events, historic villages, food, art and culture, with the sea still warm and the climate turning mild.

The catch is opening months. As of October 27, 2026, only 12 of the 169 stays on The Puglia Edit confirm they are open all year, five more confirm March to November, and eight give other seasons.

For the other 144 the months are not confirmed, because neither their official sites nor the Region’s register give them in our data. Write to them before you plan around them.

We give no temperatures or rainfall, because we have no dated official source for them.

Which stays are confirmed open in autumn and winter?

Twelve stays confirm they are open all year, two more stay open until December, and six confirm a season that runs into November. Everything else is “not confirmed” on its stay page, apart from five stays that close in September or October.

Bianco Riccio Suite Hotel in Savelletri cites its annual opening and says its gym is accessible all year round. Masseria Prosperi, near Otranto, says on its spa page that it is open all year round, from November to March too, and describes a steam bath and a heated indoor pool with jacuzzi.

Le Dune Suite Hotel, in Porto Cesareo, says it welcomes guests every day of the year.

Palazzo Flora, Palazzo Presta and Palazzo Colombo, all in Gallipoli, answer in their FAQs that they are open from March to November. Masseria Terre di Traiano, an organic agriturismo in Andria, gives the same months, and the Region’s register lists Masseria Baroni Nuovi near Brindisi for March to November. That covers early autumn and November, but not the winter months.

Are masserie open in November?

Only six of the 69 masserie on The Puglia Edit are confirmed open all year, by their own site or the Region’s register. Masseria Prosperi says so on its site, and the register lists Masseria Fano Relais & Wine, Masseria Salinola, Antica Masseria Martuccio, Masseria Pietrasole Metaresort and Relais Masseria La Grande Quercia for the whole year.

Masseria Terre di Traiano states March to November on its site, and the register gives Masseria Baroni Nuovi March to November, Masseria Acquasale April to December, Masseria Donna Menga April to early November and Masseria Le Fabriche May to September. The other 58 have no confirmed months.

Our data stops there, so write to a masseria before you book a late-autumn trip. Ask whether the house is open, whether the restaurant serves dinner on your dates, and whether breakfast is the only meal served.

Some masserie mention facilities that work out of season. Masseria Palane in Leuca says its Ipogea wellness area is available all year, with a heated pool of naturally salty water dug into the rock. Its opening months as a whole are not confirmed.

Is the sea warm enough in autumn?

Regione Puglia’s content on italia.it says the sea is still warm in autumn, which allows boat trips and long walks on the beach. It does not give a water temperature or a cut-off date, so treat it as a general guide and check again closer to your dates.

Swimming depends on more than the water. Lidos and beach clubs keep their own seasons, and private beaches attached to stays may close outside summer. If the sea matters, ask your stay what is open, and plan the trip around a heated pool if you want to swim every day.

A few stays confirm a heated pool for cooler days. Vista Ostuni says its rooftop pool is heated for a comfortable swim even during the cooler months. Palazzo Presta, by contrast, says its pool is not heated.

What can I do in Puglia in autumn and winter?

Italia.it’s autumn page, written with Regione Puglia, suggests leaving the busy routes for historic villages, on foot or by bike. It names a grand tour of two thousand kilometers by bike, from north to south, along paths, low-traffic roads and country tracks.

For walkers it points to the Via Francigena in the south and the Cammino Materano. Andiamo in Puglia’s October to April activity guide, in Italian goes further on what to do in those months.

Food is the other reason to go. The same page names cardoncelli mushrooms from the Murgia, where our Alta Murgia stays sit, and new wine, the grape pressing that many educational farms recreate, and the olive harvest.

It also suggests tours of vineyards and wine cellars. Eating at a masseria lists the stays that confirm a restaurant and cooking classes.

Towns keep their own calendars. In Lecce, italia.it describes the Teatro Politeama Greco, built in 1737, as the home of opera and symphonic seasons.

In Fasano, the local tourism portal lists Fasanomusica 2026/2027 events at the Teatro Kennedy in November 2026, among them a ballet on November 8 and an orchestra concert on November 20. Events across the region are in the regional listings on Andiamo in Puglia (in Italian).

Which area suits an off-season trip?

The confirmed year-round openings are spread over nine areas: two each in the Brindisi area, Bari and Trani and the Foggia area, and one each in Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, Taranto, Otranto, Gallipoli and Leuca. Gallipoli also has the three stays that confirm March to November, and the Alta Murgia and the Brindisi area one each.

The rest of the map is not covered. No stay in Lecce, the Valle d’Itria or Monopoli and Polignano confirms its opening months, and on the Gargano the latest confirmed season ends in December, so a winter trip to any of them means writing to the property first. Do that before you pay for flights or a hire car, and ask for the answer in writing with your dates.

Spas are easier to find than confirmed openings. The spa retreats collection lists 61 stays with a confirmed spa, and every one of the 14 areas has at least one. Sixteen stays confirm a heated pool, spread over ten areas: three each in Monopoli and Polignano and Leuca, two each in Lecce and Otranto, and one each in the Valle d’Itria, Fasano and Savelletri, Ostuni, the Gargano, the Brindisi area and the Taranto area.

A town base gives you more to do when the restaurant at your stay is closed. Lecce has seven stays in the city itself, and its theater hosts opera and symphonic seasons.

Bari and Trani is also a town-and-coast base, six of its 12 stays confirm a spa, and its area page says a stay there does not depend on a beach season. For two of the 12, Masseria Pietrasole Metaresort and Palazzo Calò in Bari, the Region’s register lists them as open all year. A countryside masseria suits a slower trip, but only if you have confirmed that its kitchen is working.

If you want the sea on your doorstep, look at the stays that confirm both a year-round opening and a position by the coast on their stay pages, and ask whether their beach facilities are open. The stay page shows the straight-line distance to the sea where the position is precise.

How do I check that a stay is open?

Start with the stay page. Where the opening months are confirmed, they appear with the source and the date we checked. Where they read “not confirmed”, the official site did not say.

Then write to the property. Give your dates and ask four things: whether the house is open, which meals are served, whether the pool and spa are running, and whether the restaurant takes outside guests if the house kitchen is closed. Keep the answer in writing.
